The Lada 1200 was based on the Italian Fiat 124, which was modified by the Russian AvtoVaz. The engine was replaced by a modern version with a camshaft above the engine cover and the suspension was raised. The first Lada 1200 models were equipped with a crank hole in the front of the car so it could be started incase of a power outage where help is not available. The car was also sold in other parts of the world under the name Vaz 2101.
